FAQ
How expensive is a working holiday?
A Working Holiday isn’t as expensive as most people think. Sure, you’ll need some initial savings to get started — usually around AUD 5,000 – 7,000 (or the equivalent in your currency) to cover your visa, flight, and the first few weeks of accommodation and living costs.
But once you start working, things flip fast. Most travellers find jobs in hospitality, tourism, farming, or construction — and the wages in countries like Australia or New Zealand are high enough to not only fund your travels but also build up savings.
In fact, many backpackers finish their Working Holiday with more money than they arrived with, all while having explored amazing places, met new people, and gained international work experience.
What kind of work will I do?
Most travellers work in hospitality or farm jobs. In cities and tourist areas, you’ll find plenty of bar, café, and restaurant work — it’s social, fun, and easy to get.
Out on the farms, the pay is usually higher, but the work can be tough and physical — think long days in the sun picking fruit or packing produce.
Both types of jobs let you fund your travels, meet people from all over the world, and experience local life in a completely different way.
How long should I go on a working holiday for?
Most people stay for around a year, which is how long the visa usually lasts. That gives you plenty of time to work, travel, and experience the country properly.
If you’re loving it and want more time, you can extend for a second or even third year by doing farm or regional work.
A few months can be fun — but a full year lets you settle in, make friends, and really live the adventure instead of just visiting.
I can't decide between Australia or New Zealand
You can’t really go wrong — both are amazing for a Working Holiday.
Australia is bigger, sunnier, and has higher wages. There are endless beaches, surf towns, and heaps of farm or hospitality jobs.
New Zealand is smaller and more laid-back, with stunning mountains, lakes, and friendlier visa rules for some nationalities.
If you want adventure and nature, go for New Zealand.
If you want sun, beaches, and great pay, choose Australia.
Many travellers end up doing both — one after the other
